I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Coolin’ Me Out” by the Isley Brothers.
Bassist Marvin Isley recently passed. A friend of mine, Funk Soul Superman LAW posted a barrage of YouTube links to deep Isley cuts. This was my favorite.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Bump ‘n’ Grind” by R. Kelly.
R. Kelly’s voice is so good that it doesn’t matter what he sings. He could sing me my own obituary from the future and I would think it was the dopest.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Use Me” by Bill Withers
Me: “Why is Bill Withers so good?”
Kathryn: “Just is. So. Good.”

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Bag Lady” by Erykah Badu.
It took some searching to find this slower, smoother version. The music video version just kind of annoys me a bit. The slow, patient build of this song is amazing. The message also:
“Girl I know sometimes it’s hard
And we can’t let go
Oh, when someone hurts you oh so bad inside
You can’t deny it, you can’t stop crying
So, oh, oh
If you start breathing
Then you won’t believe it
You’ll feel so much better”

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “I Keep Forgettin’” by Michael McDonald.
One thing you must never forget is that Michael McDonald is a damn FANTASTIC singer. He get’s made fun of a lot because of his distinctive vocal style, but dude writes and sings killer tunes. I’d like to grab a pint of beer with Michael McDonald. Michael, if you’re reading this, please contact me and we can discuss the specifics of our beer outing.

I would like to remind you that this exists: “Lowdown” by Boz Scaggs. Not a lot of people in the under 30 crowd are down with smooth, smooth Boz Scaggs. This is one of his more popular songs, but it has a great combination of stripped down groove and little flourishes here and there that is empirically proven to make heads bounce.
Yacht Rock drumming god Jeff Porcaro appears on this recording, recording a separate hi-hat track in addition to his regular set track. The whole thing just sounds and feels great. “The raw power of really smooth music.”

I would like to remind you that this exists: “My Flame” by Bobby Caldwell.
The pre-chorus (0:49) has one of my favorite bass lines of all time. This is just a great smooth track off of Bobby Caldwell’s debut album What You Won’t Do For Love.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” by the Chi-Lites.
A great way to find real JAMS are to check out hip hop sample original tracks. You can do that easily using the website The-Breaks. The Chi-Lites have a lot of great tracks and tend to be lesser known than similar groups of the time (Temptations, Four Tops). “Are You My Woman” is a totally bold tune, with funky horn riffs and intricate vocal lines and harmonies. The opening horn line, of course, was sampled for Beyonce and Jay-Z’s “Crazy In Love.”

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Be My Baby” as performed by Tiny Tim.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Whatever It Is, I Just Can’t Stop” by Jamiroquai.
This song is the funk. I was privileged enough to play trumpet on this tune live with New Vintage last spring at Hailey’s in Denton. I was subbing for Dave Richards, composer/performer extraordinaire. New Vintage consists of Dave on Trumpet/Trombone, Sylvester Onyejiaka on Tenor Sax, Dave’s brother Graham Richards on keys, Kelyn Crapp on Guitar, Cooper Appelt on Bass, Jeff Randall on Drums, and Melissa McMillan on Vocals. It was definitely a musical highlight of 2009.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “She’s Gone” by Tavares.
A cover of the Hall and Oates song. Slower and smoother than the original.
