I would like to remind you all that this exists: “On My Way” by Ben Kweller.
I can’t not tear up every time I hear this song from Ben Kweller’s album of the same name. On My Way the album is a huge jump in lyrical and musical maturity from his impressive, but ultimately haphazard first solo album, Sha Sha.
“On My Way” the song is a “one man, one guitar” song with a bit of the country flavor that has been steadily seeping into Kweller’s music. Each verse is a vignette of the storyteller beginning his path towards something he wasn’t expecting. The first verse is borderline silly, with the line “I’ll kill him with karate that I learned in Japan.” This humor grabs the listener’s attention; He or she is ready to hear the rest of the song’s heart-wrenching short stories.
People can change. People can become things they never dreamed they could become. Good people can do bad things and become bad and bad people can do good things and become good. And the change doesn’t come out of nowhere, but must start somewhere.
“Aw Mom, I always dreamt of being a good listener/So tonight I’m on my way”
