I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Son of Sam” by Elliott Smith.
Sad bastard can and does rock.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Transatlanticism” by Death Cab For Cutie.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Breathe” Télépopmusik. House and Trance music never really spoke much to me, but I really enjoy more downtempo electronic pop music.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Bag Lady” by Erykah Badu.
It took some searching to find this slower, smoother version. The music video version just kind of annoys me a bit. The slow, patient build of this song is amazing. The message also:
“Girl I know sometimes it’s hard
And we can’t let go
Oh, when someone hurts you oh so bad inside
You can’t deny it, you can’t stop crying
So, oh, oh
If you start breathing
Then you won’t believe it
You’ll feel so much better”

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “The Recluse” by Cursive.
Unlike a lot of the videos/songs I post here, I don’t really know much else by Cursive. I heard this song maybe five years ago and thought it was really good. Here, I share.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “On My Way” by Ben Kweller.
I can’t not tear up every time I hear this song from Ben Kweller’s album of the same name. On My Way the album is a huge jump in lyrical and musical maturity from his impressive, but ultimately haphazard first solo album, Sha Sha.
“On My Way” the song is a “one man, one guitar” song with a bit of the country flavor that has been steadily seeping into Kweller’s music. Each verse is a vignette of the storyteller beginning his path towards something he wasn’t expecting. The first verse is borderline silly, with the line “I’ll kill him with karate that I learned in Japan.” This humor grabs the listener’s attention; He or she is ready to hear the rest of the song’s heart-wrenching short stories.
People can change. People can become things they never dreamed they could become. Good people can do bad things and become bad and bad people can do good things and become good. And the change doesn’t come out of nowhere, but must start somewhere.
“Aw Mom, I always dreamt of being a good listener/So tonight I’m on my way”

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “Dr. King” by Mason Jennings.
Mason Jennings is a dude who likes playing the guitar, writing and singing songs. This particular one struck me. A beautiful, simple song.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: “My Girls” by Animal Collective. So this isn’t really old or obscure, but I love it all the same. The lyrics, while simple, are astounding:
There isn’t much I feel I need
A solid soul and the blood I bleed
But with a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house
Seriously, what more could you want out of life than someone to love and a place to love them? Also, this video is a trip.

I would like to remind you all that this exists: Konnakol.
Konnakol is a south Indian vocal percussion art form. This video was shown to me a few months ago by my friend Nate Sankary, drummer in my old bands and in the amazing Pop/Hip Hop band The N Result. This video (as well as most other Indian percussion videos Nate shows me) always amazes me.

I would like to remind you that this exists: “Apple Trees” by Ozma.
Ozma is what Weezer would have sounded like if they had chosen to keep being Really Really Creative after Pinkerton. This is the first Ozma song I ever heard, off of their first album, Rock and Roll Part Three.
